Teenager Almost Goes Blind With Cheap Colored Contacts

Maybe this will make someone think twice about buying colored contact lenses without prescription:
Some wearers of cosmetic contacts looking for trouble, doctor says (readingeagle.com)

Nonprescription lenses can do lot worse than altering looks
Nonprescription Novelty and colored contact lenses sold online and from mall kiosks and novelty shops are illegal and can cause blindness.
Velez said she and her daughter were frightened by her daughter's brush with blindness.
"She had to take three different drops," Velez said. "The doctor said she had a bad infection and that she had to go one day without sleep putting the antibiotic drops in her eyes once every hour. There were three different drops. One for pain and two to fight the infection."
Her daughter has recovered but Corbin said other patients aren't so lucky.
The teenage girl almost went blind. To get better, she had to stay up all night, putting in drops to save her eyes.

The law is that you can only wear contact lenses (of any kind - colored or not) under the supervision of an optometrist. This is exactly why this law was enacted. There are too many vendors out there selling colored contact lenses like candy bars. A store's supplier has them on their list and it looks like there's good markup on them, so they put them in their store, not knowing the consquences. It's the store that gets in trouble for selling them - not the consumer but even though you may be able to find color contacts without a prescription doesn't mean you should get them.

The cheap paint on these cosmetic colored contacts ends up going into the solution and this causes an eye infection. They're just made too cheaply. Too many corners are cut to bring the price down and then people buy them and put them in their eyes - almost going blind!

Only get colored contacts from vendors using quality materials like manufactures such as Acuvue or Colorblends. Be smart and don't go cheap when it comes to your eyes.

Tips for Getting Cosmetic Color Contact Lenses

Colored contact lenses are a fun and easy way to change ones appearance. These lenses come in a variety of colors and shades and can bring a new look to someone’s face in just a matter of seconds. These lenses are safe to wear and comfortable. They come in disposable and non disposable, which makes it possible to easily choose one that fits in with someone’s daily routine. Colored contacts without prescription can help someone present themselves in a different way than they are used to and bring a sense of creativity to ones overall style.

Choosing to use disposable colored contact lenses gives someone the freedom to change their eye color on a regular basis. These lenses can last for around a month before needing to be replaced and offer great vivid color. Choosing the right color is easy. Denser colors should be chosen for covering dark brown or hazel eyes. Brighter colors are best fit for people with light colored eyes, like blue or green.

There are a few tips for getting colored contact lenses that should be followed. Talking to ones eye doctor is one of the best way to get inexpensive and safe lenses. There are also many websites that offer colored lenses. Research should be done to find safe websites that have a history of providing lenses to consumers.

There is no need for a prescription to get colored contact lenses, so almost everyone is able to receive and wear these lenses. These lenses differ from other contact lenses in the fact that they are cosmetic lenses and do not serve any purpose of improving eye sight. It is still a good idea to get contact lenses that properly fit the eye to prevent any damage from occurring. These lenses should also be thin and allow for air to pass through to the cornea.

Time for a New Prescription

I plan to go in and renew my contact lens prescription soon. I'm about out of contact lenses. Well, I'm down to my last 3 but the other 3 in that box didn't work that well for me because I have astigmatism. Those didn't line up well in my eyes. I have a feeling these last 3 won't work too well.

I got my last prescription at Sears Optical. The follow up issues I had, I don't think they handled very well. They sort of left me high and dry and did not help me get replacement contact lenses for this bad batch. I think I'll try a new store that opened up here called Stanton Optical. They have some good deals going on. I also need a new prescription for my glasses, so I might get those done at the same time.

I will also get a pair of colored contact lenses, too. I might try brown and then also gray. I think gray would look cool.
